More and more people today are opened to the idea of a psychic and a psychic reading. For a lot of traditional shamanistic, cultural societies, which are not from a society founded on the idea of psychic phenomena as being evil, the idea of psychic abilities is considered quite normal.
By definition the term psychic derives from the word psyche, which means soul/mind in Greek. The term defines the idea of phenomena that emanates from the mind but transcends the space of the mind. Irish playwright Edward William Cox is credited with introducing the term psychic to the English language in 1928. In actuality he coined the phrase from a French astrologer who took the phase himself and he was born in 1842.
The term referring to a person who is a psychic suggests that the person has paranormal powers or abilities called psi. Psi is the ability to transfer information or energy telepathically or possess extrasensory perception with no biological explanations. There are 2 categories of Psi. Psi-gamma is paranormal cognition or extra sensory perception. Psi-kappa is paranormal action or psychokinesis. Psychokinesis is the ability to move things with ones mind regardless of time space and energy and no known physical effort. Clairvoyance, which traces back to 17th century France is the term used of people with the ability to transfer information about an object, location or event without using the 5 senses. Another type of psychic is a medium. A medium has abilities to contact and communicate with other dimensions like the realm of the spirits. There are many types of Psychic Readings. Many psychics use tools to assist them with a psychic reading. Such tools may be Tarot Cards, objects, crystals, glasses of water, cups with tealeaves or coffee, palms, scrying and other things. The objects serve as a point to channel or direct their energy into in order to extract information upon conducting a reading.
A gifted psychic may possess more than one psychic ability. The psychic reading can occur face to face or at a distance. Face to face readings, which most people prefer, are those done in front of the psychic. Distant readings are done with the person not physically present as on the telephone, Internet or with a report. There are also psychic readings called Psychometry readings. In a Psychometry reading the psychic goes to a location with an object to get information about the event or situation that has transpired. Many cases involving missing persons or unsolved murders hire psychics with this ability to find out where the missing person is or find the murderer. In addition to clairvoyance and ESP a psychic may also have Clairaudience, which is the ability to hear things outside of normal hearing as in spirits talking. Psychic may also have the ability perceive smells, like flowers, perfume and things of that nature and be able to predict the future as well as tell what has happened in the past. Some psychics use divination, for a psychic reading, which involves a tool usually spiritual or religious in origin as a form of conducting their readings. For example in the Yoruba Religion that was brought here via slavery, the initiate uses cowry shells for divination readings. I am a firm believer of psychic readings. My great grandmothers, both of them, my grandmother and my mother all passed on the ability of psychic reading to me. I don’t view it as a hocus pocus sensational thing. I view it as a tool to guide me in my life when I need answers to situations. All good psychics are sincere and I know a few feel this way as well. They shy away from the commercial aspects of what a psychic reading have become on television and see it as a valuable gift to help people who come to them seeking help and guidance.
