Understanding Spiritualism
Spiritualism as defined by National Spiritualist Association of America is the “Science Philosophy and Religion of continuous life based upon the demonstrated fact that communication by means of mediumship with those who live in the spirit world. Aside from this definition there are many traditional societies who believe in communication with the spirit world as a normal practice. This is particularly true for shamanistic societies in Asia and Africa as well as those in Europe. Many people have also adapted these beliefs as part of the Diaspora when the slaves were brought to the Colonies and what imperialists called the New World. Indigenous cultures always believe in spiritual communication with other realms as a means of existing in this one.
There are many forms of Spiritualism. It is not a set practice confined only to one belief system. What it does imply despite religious orientation is the belief in a metaphysical existence. The metaphysical aspects of the beliefs are defined by a group or person who practices such ideology. Case in point being you have spiritualists that believe in reincarnation and you have spiritualists that don’t. The latter of the two types believe that one dies and crosses over to another realm and that is it. It is from the other realm that spirits communicate with us. Reincarnation of a spirit occurs because it is believed that spirit still has lessons to learn on earth, which is why he or she returns.
In a larger sense the idea of spiritualism embraces all truths relating to the spiritual nature of man. All religions have a belief in god, which makes it in essence spiritual. Spiritualism encompasses everything from God or Gods, the inhabitants of the spirit world, spiritual influences to all supernatural forces, such as the forces of nature. All these aspects can be invoked through the practices of spiritualism.
Most practitioners of spiritualism believe in mediumistic practices. A medium is a person who can communicate with an entity or spirit directly. A medium is sensitive to the frequencies of other dimensions and knows how to tune into to the dimensions to open communications with souls of the departed or other entities. Mediums use various methods to invoke the spiritual dimension. They can go into a total altered state of consciousness so the entity or spirit can enter their psychical body. There are other mediums that have the gifts of seeing the spirit, hearing the spirit or feeling the spirit in a conscious state and communicating what the spirit says or does. Spiritualism is not based on a dogma of ideology. It is based on the idea that there is life after death. It affirms the idea that the soul survives physical death. Spiritualists feel that this idea is proven time and again especially with the use of mediums and their skills.
Spiritualism also makes it very clear that no spirit will contact anyone unless the conditions are conducive for it. The main consideration in a successful communication is that the spirit wanted to make its presence known. Unlike the Hollywood version of spiritualism, where these dark evil people go around conjuring spiritual forces to do their biddings spiritualism is a way to heal and understand other realms of existence around us. It enables us to live in harmony with these realms by understanding them and not to fear them.
